Michele Collins didn't realize what she had done until it was too late.

She stared at the sign. Men's restroom, the sign inside the restroom read.

"I was washing my hands, and I looked over at the urinals," she said Thursday, smiling and laughing.

It has been a joke at McGuire's Irish Pub in Pensacola for 30 years. If you are a regular there, you know the restroom doors are mislabeled. There is small print on both restroom doors clarifying the labels, but people don't always notice. There also are signs inside the restrooms with the right labels.

The signs were the same at the Destin McGuire's until a man walked in on a 15-year-old girl using the women's restroom. The girl's father, Chris Hall, complained to the state Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and the restaurant was forced to change the signs.

"We saw at least 10 other confused people do the same while at the restaurant," Hall wrote. "When we confronted the acting manager we were told to get over it, and that it was intentionally marked as such to create a sense of embarrassment for unsuspecting people."

Hall's daughter was upset by what happened.

"My daughter felt extremely embarrassed and was crying when we left the restaurant," the letter said.

Billy Martin, general manager of the Destin restaurant, said the mislabeling of the restrooms is an old Irish joke. There were signs inside the restrooms with the correct labels.

"It's not meant to be malicious," he said.

Petitions have been posted on the restroom doors at the Destin eatery, with more than 3,000 people asking for the old signs to return.

"This has been in a 10-day period," Martin said.

The old signs had been there 10 years.

There was a complaint about the restrooms at the Destin eatery several years ago, said Holly Benson, secretary for the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and former state representative from Pensacola.

"Typically, we respond to complaints but don't proactively go after things like this," Benson said. "We haven't had any type of complaint about the Pensacola one that would put it in a similar position."

When the Destin restaurant was inspected Jan. 9, the restroom signs were not among the violations the restaurant was asked to correct.

The restaurant was told to put the correct signs on the restroom doors after an April 24 visit. The restaurant was given a May 1 deadline.

"We have to do what they tell us to," Martin said. "We have no choice in the matter."

Perry Hunter, a manager at the Pensacola restaurant, would not comment Thursday.

Collins, 41, who went into the wrong restroom at the Pensacola McGuire's, isn't going to file a complaint.

"I just felt like a dummy," said Collins, who was visiting the restaurant for the second time.

She was at the restaurant with James Ewing, 59, who knows the restrooms are mislabeled. He didn't warn Collins.

"I don't think it ever hurt anybody," Ewing said. "I've walked in the wrong bathroom here. I didn't file a complaint."

Of course not, Collins said.

"Life should have some levity in it," Ewing said. "It shouldn't be so serious."
