THE royal at the centre of an alleged drugs and sex blackmail plot is understood to be the Queen's nephew Viscount David Linley.

Two men are in jail awaiting trial for allegedly blackmailing 46-year-old Viscount Linley by threatening to release a mobile phone video they say shows a royal aide snorting cocaine while discussing how he was once engaged in a sex act with the royal.

Socialite Ian Strachan, 30, and Sean McGuigan, 40, both of London, are due to appear at the Old Bailey in December after allegedly demanding 50,000 ($A112,000) in return for the footage.

Sources have revealed it is the Queen's nephew – the son of her sister Princess Margaret – who was allegedly being blackmailed.
