Men could soon be able to use a 'male Pill' that has no side effects, scientists have revealed.

The chemical implant acts as a contraceptive but does not change the balance of a man's sex hormones.

Scientists have discovered a substance that can temporarily block the development of sperm without altering testosterone levels and without causing unwanted side effects.

They hope human trials of a new contraceptive for men based on their discovery could begin within a few years.

Other versions of the 'male Pill' are already in development but work by altering hormone levels in the man's body.

In trials so far these have produced no worrying side effects - however scientists think men may still worry about whether introducing female hormones could harm their virility in some way.

The new approach would therefore avoid this problem. The common perception is that few women would actually believe a man who said he was on the Pill.

However a study published in the British Medical Journal in 2000 found that only two per cent of women said they would not trust their partner to take a male Pill.

Several teams of scientists have therefore been working on trying to develop an equivalent of the female Pill for men.

Until now this has involved using hormones to try to prevent sperm production.

But the new approach reported in the latest edition of the journal Nature Medicine involves a substance called adherin.

It works by interfering with the way cells in the testes help nurture the development of mature sperm.

It blocks the normal bond which develops between immature sperm and tissue called Sertoli cells. This then stops the cells developing into mature sperm which are capable of fertilising an egg.

A study found that when given to rats, sperm production dropped to such low levels as to render them infertile.

However once the drug was stopped, the animals' sperm production soon returned to normal.

Lead researcher Chuen Yan Cheng of the Population Council in New York said this would be vital for any kind of pill to become acceptable to men.

"If you give the consumer the peace of mind that their fertility will be restored and that their hormones are not going to be affected, they may feel that it is safer to use this contraceptive," he said.

Adherin on its own is known to have toxic effects on the body, but the team overcame this problem by ensuring it would only attach to one cell in the body - the Sertoli cells.

The team tested it on vital organs such as the kidneys, liver, heart and brain, and found it had no harmful side effects.

Dr Cheng and his team hope their finding will lead to a male contraceptive - although say it is likely to be an implant rather than a pill as the tablet would be broken down in the digestive tract.

Dr Cheng said the approach taken by other researchers of using hormone-based contraceptives was not wrong. However he said it was important to give people a choice.

Earlier this year researchers working on a hormonal-based male contraceptive said an implant or injection could be available within five years.

Another study, published in the Lancet found that men given a hormonal-based contraceptive drug saw their sperm count return to normal just over three months after they stopped using it.

Marion L. Sullins was expected to appear in court today on a charge of second-degree sexual assault by correctional staff.

According to a criminal complaint, a 35-year-old male inmate at Oakhill Correctional Institution told Fitchburg investigators that he and Sullins often flirted with each other while working in the kitchen.

At one point in March, the inmate asked Sullins, 'Are we gonna make this official or what?' and she responded, 'You're just good for an old woman's ego.'

She then sent the inmate to the storage closet for some items, and as he was leaving Sullins allegedly stepped in front of him and said, 'Are you gonna give me a kiss?'

While they only kissed on that occasion, they later met several times through July during meal time in the storage area or the coolers to engage in sex, the complaint states.

Sullins told an investigator that she and the inmate flirted, but she initially denied that she had sex with him, the complaint says. But she then admitted that she had engaged in the sexual activity without coercion. She told police she knew she had made a mistake.

'I feel that I have let myself down,' she reportedly said. 'I let everybody down.'"

A 9-year-old suburban boy will not be circumcised as his mother wishes, a judge ruled Tuesday -- a victory for the child's father, who called the procedure "not necessary.''

Cook County Circuit Judge Jordan Kaplan said he was unconvinced by experts for the mother who maintained that circumcision would help stem the boy's recurring irritation and infections.

"My child is the most important thing to me. But it's absolutely not necessary,'' said the father, a 50-year-old apartment manager from Arlington Heights.

Boy said to be 'anxious'

The mother, a Northbrook homemaker who has remarried, was disappointed with the ruling, said her attorney, Gail O'Connor.

"She was trying to do what she felt best for her child. It was about the child's health,'' said O'Connor.

Kaplan noted that the boy did not want to be circumcised and that the child's stepfather described the boy as "anxious" over the procedure, which involves removal of foreskin from the penis. The father admitted he had shown the boy graphic pictures of a circumcision.

Procedure not as common

The closely watched case put a spotlight on a procedure which, for the last 10 years in the United States, has been dropping in popularity. In 2003, about 56 percent of American boys were circumcised, down from 64.7 percent in 1980, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

After the boy's parents split in 2003, the mother was awarded sole custody but the divorce settlement provided that any "extraordinary" health care procedure required approval of the father.

Two weeks before the boy was to be circumcised, the child told his father oe impending operation. The father objected and filed suit after being unable to talk the mother out of the plan.

The father, an immigrant from Poland -- where circumcision is less prevalent than in the United States -- said he is not circumcised and that it is not part of his family's tradition.

The father had a right to object and "the evidence did not establish that circumcision was medically necessary at the present time,'' the judge ruled.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says circumcision does "have some potential medical benefits'' but they "are not compelling enough" to label it as a medically necessary. Some researchers have argued that circumcision helps protect against urinary tract infection, HIV infection and penile cancer.

The case revealed some hard feelings between the couple, whom the Sun-Times is not naming in order to protect the boy's anonymity.

A lawyer for the father suggested the mother wanted her son circumcised so that he would look more like her new husband.

Her lawyers pointed to court records that show the boy's father has failed to provide proper financial support for the boy in the past.

The £49.97 kit comprises a chrome pole extendible to 8ft 6ins, a 'sexy dance garter' and a DVD demonstrating suggestive dance moves.

The kit, condemned as 'extremely dangerous' by family campaigners yesterday, was discovered by mother of two Karen Gallimore who was searching for Christmas gifts for her two daughters, Laura 10, and Sarah, 11.

Mrs Gallimore, 33, of Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, said yesterday: "I'm no prude, but any children can go on there and see it. It's just not on."

Dr Adrian Rogers, of family campaigning group Family Focus said yesterday that the kit would "destroy children's lives".

Judge Traded Sex for Drugs

Racine - A former Town of Raymond municipal judge is in jail awaiting formal charges on allegations that he forced a woman to perform sex acts - some of which were captured on videotape - for room and board, and for access to her prescription medications.

Investigators were reviewing more than 500 videotapes found at the home of Glenn A. Staege, 67, a court document shows.

According to a probable cause statement that was read into a Racine County Circuit Court hearing on Monday, at least one videotape showed the 56-year-old victim having sex with Staege. The tape then shows him handing money and a pill bottle of medication to the woman, according to the probable cause statement.

Also found in the search of his home were bottles of prescription medications, some with the name of the woman, and the names of other people.

Staege was being held Monday afternoon in the Racine County Jail on a $255,000 bond after the probable cause hearing. A judge gave the Racine County district attorney's office until 1:30 p.m. Wednesday to issue formal charges. Staege was arrested Friday.

More time needed

Racine County District Attorney Michael Nieskes said his office asked for more time before filing formal charges because of the extent of the evidence uncovered in a search of Staege's property.

"Normally, we would be filing a criminal complaint, but because the investigation is somewhat complicated, there is a lot of evidence we need to go through before we can do that," Nieskes said.

Nieskes added that these are only allegations against Staege.

"You are presumed innocent until you are found guilty," he added.

According to the probable cause statement:

The woman and her boyfriend were homeless, and Staege was allowing them to live in a battered van on his property. The van had an electric heater inside, a TV, and there was a power strip in the van, and cords running from an adjacent barn.

In exchange for staying there, the woman said, she had to do work on the farm, which included bookkeeping, cleaning and whatever else Staege asked her to do. As a condition of living on the property, she stated, she was required to sign a contract that mandated that she turn over all her prescription drugs to Staege to be distributed by him. She had been prescribed Percocet, Valium, Toprol, Lisinopril, Prilosec and Ambien.

The woman stated that Staege would not give her medication, food, soda or cigarettes unless she performed various sex acts.

The first sexual incident occurred Aug. 29, 2006.

In her 1 ½ month stay on his property, she said, she had 18 encounters with him.

Officers executed a search warrant at Staege's residence and recovered in excess of 500 videotapes.

In addition to medications that appeared to belong to the woman, officers also located a large quantity of medications in Staege's room that belonged to people who were no longer living on the Staege property.

The probable cause statement also indicates there were eight other people living on the Staege property at the time the search warrant was issued.

Staege was an Oak Creek teacher in the 1960s and 1970s and was elected municipal judge for Raymond in 1984, 1985, 1989 and 1995. He ran unsuccessfully for town supervisor and town clerk.

For several years, Staege has battled town and Racine County officials for debris and junk on his property on Eight Mile Road.

In 2001, Staege was found guilty of a misdemeanor for fraud in obtaining prescription drugs, state court records showed.

Judge Katherine Stolz ordered him held in the Pierce County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.

According to a Pierce County Sheriff’s Department report, McPhail’s wife told investigators that she caught her husband on the back porch about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday having intercourse with their 4-year-old female pit bull terrier.

A police officer whose Web page on MySpace.com included images of dismembered women has been indefinitely suspended, authorities said.

Jeremiah Love's page on the social-networking site contained images and statements that could undermine public confidence in the police department, according to an internal affairs report. Love, 26, was suspended Tuesday.

Julia Vasquez, an assistant city attorney, said Love espoused a fondness for violence on the Web page that would hurt his testimony in criminal cases.

"These are comments that would make it difficult if he was trying to defend himself against a complaint regarding excessive force as an officer," Vasquez said. "There may be no evidence of excessive force, but when someone looks at his site, the comments could be used against him in court."

Love's attorney, Richard Carter, of the Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas, said the officer would appeal the suspension on the grounds that the punishment is excessive. Carter said the appeal would be heard by an arbitrator.

The Web page, which has been removed from MySpace.com, was listed under the name Leatherface. Graphic images on the page included a woman with the word "loath" carved into her flesh. Love listed his occupation as "super hero/serial killer."

According to the internal affairs report, Love designed his site in the genre of horror movies. He told investigators the site was meant to be humorous, according to the report.

Kansas City infoZine News - Foley Scandal Could Trigger Intrusive Internet Regulation - USA: "By Kirsten Brown - Web experts warn that the investigation of disgraced former congressman Mark Foley's online conversations with teenagers may prompt legislation that compromises the privacy of Internet users.

Washington, D.C. - Scripps Howard Foundation Wire - infoZine - "Already we can see the rumblings of legislation in Congress," said Tim Lordan, executive director of the advisory committee to the Congressional Internet Caucus. "It's definitely going to color the debate."

But parents of Web-browsing children should not view Foley as the classic example of an Internet predator, Lordan said.

"His interactions with these teenagers were begun with notes in the hallway, walks for ice cream down the street. I mean, he attended the pages' graduation," he said.

Yet parental fear fueled by recent events could encourage legislators to push for more stringent Internet laws, Lordan said.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., are among public officials who support legislation that would require data retention, which would force Internet service providers to document and store all users' online activities.

"One thing we've continuously heard from state and local investigators and prosecutors is that many Internet Service Providers don't retain records for a sufficient period of time," Gonzales told a Senate committee Sept. 19.

He said a department task force is working on the issue.

Gonzales' proposal represents an effort to use child porn as a political issue, said Ohio State University law Professor Peter Swire.

"By wrapping themselves in a so-called family values position, the administration tries to make surveillance of the communications of all Americans seem attractive," said Swire, the former chief counselor for privacy in the Clinton administration.

Under this policy, ISPs would be forced to keep records of a user's every move indefinitely, from Web site postings to search engine queries, said Jim Harper, director of information policy studies at the Cato Institute, a nonprofit libertarian research foundation. Law enforcement officials could get access to those records, he predicted.

"Before too long, you have a serious surveillance system operating on all of us," Harper said. "The data obtained by the data retention mandate will be used for all kinds of investigation. Law enforcement will switch from pursuing criminals ... to pursuing people."

The Department of Justice, which is investigating Foley and his correspondence with former House pages, feeds off parental concern by using the exaggerated statistics of experts, Harper said.

"They say child pornography is growing exponentially," he said. "It is not growing exponentially. It's growing just like all online activity is growing, and as a percentage of online activity, it's probably not growing at all."

The Justice Department released its "Project Safe Childhood Guide" in May, which stated, "Experts agree that the escalation in both the prevalence and severity of child pornography is driven at least in part by advances in computer technology and increased access to the Internet."

Harper said that "experts are entirely given to hyperbole in making their case, and the Justice Department loves to use that to get what they want. The [Foley] case we've alluded to is boorish and gross behavior ... but it wasn't horrific, and as far as we know at this point no one was physically harmed."

The Electronic Communication Privacy Act of 1986 allows the government to request that ISPs preserve records of a suspect's Net activity for 90 days. Once a warrant or court order has been obtained, the company hands over the information. The law does not, however, require that ISPs keep permanent records of user activity, which is normally deleted after a certain period.

The Foley case points to a failure by law enforcement to act quickly rather than a need for stricter laws, said David Sobel, senior counsel for the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

"There seems to be dispute as to how long ago there was reason to be suspicious in this case," Sobel said. "But clearly it sounds as if there was enough time to take appropriate steps to document whatever activities might have been occurring. ... I think it's an illustration of the fact that the existing law would have been adequate if the appropriate steps had been taken in that case."

Accountability should be placed on parents' shoulders, Harper said.

"The federal government cannot, will not and should not replace parents in protecting children," he said. "Politicians who come forward and say, 'We're going to protect children this way,' are giving false hope to parents who should be stepping up themselves. Again and again I say it, put the computer in the living room, talk to your kids."

Geir Soeli, the project leader of the exhibition entitled 'Against Nature,' told Reuters: 'Homosexuality has been observed for more than 1,500 animal species, and is well documented for 500 of them.'

The museum said the exhibition, opening on Thursday despite condemnation from some Christians, was the first in the world on the subject. Soeli said a Dutch zoo had once organised tours to view homosexual couples among the animals.

'The sexual urge is strong in all animals. ... It's a part of life, it's fun to have sex,' Soeli said of the reasons for homosexuality or bisexuality among animals.
